College football players often define their draft day status with an eye-catching display of power, speed, agility and football skills. NFL scouts evaluate athletes at the NFL Combine, individual workouts and collegiate pro days. Draft position truly sets the tone for a young player’s career, dictating everything from signing bonus to base salary to playing time. There also is a strong correlation between round drafted and career length. Workout performance is critical to maximizing one’s earning potential. A few inches more on a vertical jump, four extra reps on the bench press, or shaving three-tenths of a second off the time on a 40-yard dash can elevate a virtual unknown into a mid or early round pick.
